Winter Handicap: Registration deadline is Friday (also, a note on how it works...)

Our Winter handicap tournament officially closes for registrations on this Friday (16th).

Unlike the summer handicap, there is a plate competition for first round losers, so there are four chances to win your place in history on the club’s Honour Boards.

I’ve been asked how the handicaps work and how they’re set.

Basically, wherever you sit in the Squash league you will be given skill rating – the equates to a starting score advantage or disadvantage, depending on whether you are the lower or higher skilled player. Done correctly, players of vastly different skill levels have an equal chance of winning.

The handicap ratings are set by the organising committee, led by Greg Wallyn. Input is taken from the league organiser and others. When someone is new to the club, or not in the leagues for a while, a rating is set based on perceived ability. The organisers monitor the competition for rating fairness.

The tournament is open to current DSC members. Closing date for registrations is Friday 16th January. The draw will be made on the weekend of 17-18th February and the tournament starts on 19th January. The Cup and Plate finals are on Saturday 21st February.

  • Don’t forget – it’s free to enter!
